Papillion La Vista Community Schools held a public hearing during its regular board meeting on an amendment to the district's special building fund budget, proposing an increase to $68,058,561 to cover accelerated bond-construction spending through Aug. 31, 2025.
At the hearing, a district staff member presenting the budget said the special building fund was underestimated in the district's September budget and that an accelerated construction schedule has increased projected expenditures. He told the board the district currently has 12 active construction projects and that the amended figure would give the district authority to spend through Aug. 31, when the 2025-26 budget will take effect.
The presenter emphasized the board was not asking for new taxes: "we're not asking for any additional taxes that already have been approved by the voters in 2023 and the board back in September for the special building fund," he said. The district said architects BCDM reviewed projected expenditures as part of the update. The next step is to return the amendment to the board for action at its June 23 meeting.
The board noted the Nebraska Open Meetings Law is posted at the meeting entrance. No members of the public registered comments on the hearing; the hearing was closed at 6:03 p.m.
Why it matters: the special building fund pays for the district's bond construction projects, and increasing the budget authorizes additional spending through the current fiscal year without seeking new voter approval.
