During public statements at the June 10 meeting, resident Nancy Decker asked the Common Council to address speeding and crashes at the intersection of Whitsall and Southwest Haven near Havenwood Lake Apartments.
Decker told council she and her husband have a clear view of driveways and the intersection and have witnessed fender-benders and more serious crashes. She cited three contributing factors: the posted speed limit (35 mph east of the intersection), drivers commonly exceeding the limit (she estimated drivers travel 45 mph), and increased traffic from nearby residential developments and businesses including a Kwik Trip and other nonresidential destinations.
Decker asked the council to: reduce the speed limit on Whitsall from 35 to 25 mph to match Southwest Haven; facilitate increased enforcement including occasional radar presence; and consider adding flashing yellow warning lights. She said she previously contacted the city and the Town of Algoma about the issue and was told speed-limit changes are difficult once set.
Mayor and council accepted the public comment; staff did not commit to an immediate action during the meeting and advised that traffic/transportation staff review and follow-up would be the appropriate next step.
