Carbon County shelter reports steady adoptions, large donations and pending facility work

The Carbon County Animal Shelter Advisory Commission heard director Tom report improved adoption and donation figures and discussed a set of pending facility repairs and equipment updates at its June 3 meeting at 44 Susquehanna Street in Bimthorpe.
Tom, the shelter director, told commissioners that in April the shelter received $2,736 in donated food, supplies totaling $20,091 and that kennels numbered 16. "Number of dogs at the start of the month was 22. Number of dogs at the end of the month were 16. Adoptions were 7," Tom said. He also reported one owner surrender taken in and eight returns to owners during April.
The director gave separate May figures: a donated food shipment of $5,141, supplies valued at $2,658, 16 kennels, 16 dogs at the start of the month and 15 at the end, and nine adoptions in May. Tom said owner surrenders for May were two and four dogs were returned to their owners; police calls and after‑hours calls rose compared with April.
Why it matters: the numbers show month‑to‑month changes in intake and outcomes the commission uses for planning and budgeting. Commissioners and staff noted donations and volunteer projects are helping reduce immediate supply needs but left several maintenance items unresolved.
Commission discussion and staff updates focused on security, equipment and minor capital projects. Tom said a camera vendor has inspected the facility and the cameras are awaiting installation. He also reported that the last three kennel doors needed for the facility have been ordered and should complete an outstanding equipment need.
On maintenance, commissioners and staff discussed a recurring roof leak and a spot in the ceiling that is showing mold. "The roof leak... it only leaks sometimes," Tom said. He and other members said the leak and the mold spot should be addressed to avoid further damage.
The commission discussed a donated $5,000 fund earmarked for a shed repair. Commissioners said maintenance has limited bandwidth and recommended asking the county commissioners to consider soliciting bids from local contractors so the work could proceed using the donated materials funds. The shelter also reported it may request a temporary storage unit for yard‑sale donations if county approval for the event is received.
Other business covered routine items: the commission said a state dog warden will visit after the meeting for an informational session, and commissioners noted local media coverage of recent kennel door work and the memorial garden. The group also forwarded information to the county commissioners about a local Eagle Scout candidate who proposed building a donation box for after‑hours contributions.
