Extension faculty and an agriculture agent addressed practical use of multi‑rotor drones for vegetation treatments, monitoring and post‑treatment documentation at the WRI conference.
Jody (Utah State University Extension, Sevier County) reviewed drone types and operational uses, describing crop and range applications including multispectral mapping, precision herbicide spraying, seeding and targeted fertilizer application. He emphasized operational features relevant to WRI work: modern ag drones carry 10–15 gallons of liquid, fly programmed grid patterns with RTK GPS, use prop‑wash to help push spray into the canopy and can treat roughly 30–40 acres per hour depending on tank size and refill logistics.
Practical advice for practitioners: certify pilots under FAA Part 107 for flight authorization and, in Utah, obtain pesticide application permissions (state applicator rules) before using drones to apply herbicides; sensitive species, boilerplate of application rates and local airspace constraints apply. Drones are most efficient on irregular small parcels, wet or rough ground where trucks or tractors are impractical, and in areas where minimizing personnel exposure to chemicals is important.
Jody said costs are falling, but the technology evolves rapidly, batteries limit continuous flight time, and operators must plan staging, battery and refill logistics. He recommended pre‑treatment chemical options for difficult species (for example, woody resprouts) to increase the life of mechanical treatments and reduce re‑treatment frequency. Private contractors are becoming more common in Utah and extension will help compile lists of local operators for practitioners.
DWR and other managers at the meeting suggested drones can complement traditional mechanical and airborne methods and are a useful addition to WRI toolkits when integrated with site‑appropriate seeding and follow‑up weed control.
