Spokane Valley presents 2025 parks, recreation and aquatics season preview; summer camps and swim lessons near capacity

Recreation coordinator Kendall May presented the Spokane Valley Parks and Recreation 2025 season preview on May 20, outlining recreation programs, aquatics offerings and parks maintenance and events.
May said the spring-summer recreation guide was mailed and distributed to partner locations and that the city uses online, social and in-person outreach to promote programs. Highlights include a Park & Meal program (June 16'Aug. 7) in partnership with East Valley School District that provides free meals to anyone 18 and under; the summer day-camp program (June 17'Aug. 23) with capacity for 56 kids per week that filled within 48 hours and now has a wait list of over 100; and wilderness camp (ages 8'14) with remaining openings.
May said the city partnered with Dragon Flight Archery for an indoor archery program that has filled both summer sessions; popular adult dance classes and expanded outdoor movies (five nights, including three at Balfour Park hosted by Kiwanis) are planned. Therapeutic Recreation Services, in partnership with Spokane Parks and Recreation, will continue programs for people with disabilities and trail-based programming.
On aquatics, staff will open two pools on June 16 and the third pool the following Monday to allow additional staff training time; swim lessons will start slightly later in the season to avoid cold-weather low participation. May said the YMCA, which provides seasonal lifeguards and pool staff under contract, has already hired pool managers and lead guards and received over 100 lifeguard applications.
May reported more than 140 swim-team registrations and over 700 swim-lesson registrations as of the staff report; the city offers scholarship support through the Spokane Parks Foundation and will again host free "Swim Fridays" sponsored by Numerica. The annual "Paws in the Pool" dog-swim event is scheduled for Aug. 24.
May also summarized shelter reservations, special-event permitting, field rentals by Spokane Indians Youth Baseball, Centennial Trail repairs and Appleway trail tree plantings (June 12 volunteer planting coordinated with Lands Council). Staff said Centennial Trail medallions removed for resurfacing are available at the CenterPlace office.
