Jenks aquarium awards $71,641.45 purchase for shark quarantine pipe fittings to Harrington Plastics

The Jenks Aquarium board voted to award a purchase order of $71,641.45 to Harrington Plastics for PVC pipe and fittings used in the aquarium's shark quarantine filtration system.
Kenny Alexandopoulos, an aquarium staff member who presented the purchase request, said the items are part of the Phase 1 budget previously approved and are for the water makeup system, salt mixing system and filtration for the main shark-holding tank. He said staff solicited quotes from three vendors and chose the lowest responsive bidder. "They said that they'll honor the quote," Alexandopoulos said when asked whether Harrington would accept a May 14 quote that had lapsed.
The vendor list in the packet included Harrington Plastics and Courtral Process Systems; Alexandopoulos explained Harrington recently acquired Courtral and therefore both names appeared on the documentation. He said the fittings are consistent with the aquarium's existing Spears-brand parts, which staff prefers to retain to avoid incompatible spare parts across exhibits. "Everything is apples and apples," Alexandopoulos said when asked whether the physical specifications matched across bidders.
Board members asked whether the purchase included extra spare parts. Alexandopoulos said he typically orders 10–15 additional small fittings but reduces over-ordering for larger-diameter items because of cost and existing stock from prior projects (he said leftover parts from a sea turtle exhibit reduced the current procurement cost). He also confirmed aquarium staff will perform installation and maintenance in-house rather than contracting out.
A motion to award the purchase to Harrington Plastics was made and seconded; the board recorded five yes votes from Craig Murray, Montgomery, Brown, Blackburn and Chair Corey Monks and the motion carried.
Staff said the purchase is a line item in the Phase 1 budget for the shark quarantine project; staff did not give a contractor schedule tied to the purchase date beyond saying the vendor would honor the quoted price. No statutes, ordinances or external funding sources were cited during the discussion.
