Omega Psi Phi honored for mentoring work; Jumpstart NC presents prison reentry program to commissioners

Two community presentations at the May 20 Wayne County commissioners meeting highlighted local mentoring and prison‑reentry efforts.
Octavius Murphy of the Phi Alpha Alpha chapter of Omega Psi Phi told the board the chapter received the Mighty Sixth District mentoring program of the year award for its fatherhood and mentoring work with children at North Drive Elementary and community families. Murphy said the local chapter provides weekly mentoring and family engagement in partnership with the school system and the Duplin County Public Library's Read2 program.
Rob Whitener of Jumpstart NC introduced the county to a 40‑week prison inside program and an outside reentry program. Whitener described the program model (small‑group facilitation, accountability, a 40‑week curriculum) and cited recovery and recidivism numbers reported from programs operating in South Carolina and elsewhere: "96 percent of those who successfully complete Jumpstart on the inside stay out once they get out," he said, adding the program emphasizes submission to authority, counselor training and personal responsibility.
Commissioners thanked presenters and recognized the role of mentoring and reentry services in prevention and rehabilitation. The board took no formal action on either presentation.
