The Johnston County Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted a proclamation on May 19 declaring July 18, 2025 as Summer Learning Week in Johnston County and commending local partners for summer enrichment and literacy programs.
Janelle Stevenson, co-chair of the Reach Grow committee for Partnership for Children, asked the board to proclaim National Summer Learning Week (July 14–19, 2025) to raise awareness about summer learning loss and to highlight county programs designed to keep children engaged and learning. She described several local programs, including a summer literacy infusion program with five sites anticipated to serve nearly 300 students and partnerships with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences for outreach events.
Commissioner Davis read the proclamation into the record; a motion and second followed and the board carried the proclamation by voice vote.
Why this matters: Commissioners said summer learning programs help mitigate learning loss and support students’ readiness for the coming school year.
Next steps: The county will share the proclamation with local partners; program events are scheduled in June and July as organizers communicated to the board.
