The Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone coordinator told the council on May 14 that the city submitted two state grant applications: a $453,000 request for a second phase of security cameras and an $820,000 application for streetscape improvements along Broadway and nearby side streets.
According to the coordinator, the phase‑2 camera application would add 14 new cameras and upgrade eight existing cameras for a total of 22 cameras, building on an earlier phase. The work is intended to secure Broadway businesses and sidewalks and will be coordinated with the police department.
The second application would fund sidewalks and streetscape work on Broadway between Fifth and Cottage and on East 18th and East 20th streets to improve walkway quality and business access, the coordinator said. She urged local business owners to participate in an upcoming 5‑year plan meeting at the Bayonne Museum to help inform priorities.
During public comment, a resident raised concerns about deteriorating brick pavers on Broadway and asked who will maintain or replace them once U E Z projects are completed. The coordinator and other staff said the U E Z assists with initial installation but maintenance typically becomes the responsibility of property owners; the city said future sidewalks in the project area may be poured concrete rather than pavers to limit ongoing owner maintenance.
Councilmembers and staff also discussed earlier camera purchases: the council approved purchase of mobile surveillance trailer cameras for $229,401.69 and authorized additional camera‑related grant applications during the meeting.
The council adopted the related consent resolutions and encouraged the coordinator to publish event dates and application details so business owners can engage with the five‑year plan and streetscape work.
