Candidates emphasize teachers, CTE programs, volunteers and raising graduation rates

Sreedhar Chitoor said diversity of students and programming is a district asset and listed increased graduation rates, new CTE pathways and dual-language programs among recent gains. He cited rising graduation figures and said state aid changes had improved the district’s funding mix.
Austin Wolfgang called teachers “one of our biggest strengths” and highlighted CTE offerings, saying the district has “up to 17 pathways” for career and technical education and that expanding those locally keeps students in Albany rather than sending them to regional BOCES campuses. Wolfgang said he’s spoken with police leadership about a pathway from Albany High to the police department and said expanding practical career opportunities is a priority.
Edith Leet focused on volunteers and early literacy: she proposed concentrating volunteers in lower grades so more students are reading at grade level by third grade and said low-cost volunteer programs can provide one-on-one mentoring to improve outcomes. All three candidates agreed that strengthening relationships and early supports would help raise graduation rates and student engagement.
