After public comment, Flat Rock council agrees to open bids for trash, yard waste and recycling services

The Flat Rock City Council agreed to open the city’s trash, yard waste and recycling contract to competitive bids after public comment from Stevens Disposal raised alternatives to the incumbent, council members said.
Kevin Shubman of Stevens Disposal told the council the company has 37 years in business, currently holds agreements with 22 municipalities (including neighboring communities), and operates a fleet of about 200 vehicles. "We currently hold agreements with 22 municipalities, of which many of them are your neighboring communities," Shubman said. He urged the council to take the services out to bid rather than renew the contract.
Council discussion noted the city’s existing contract expires at the end of the month. The mayor recommended tabling immediate action for at least two weeks to collect additional information and to speak with both providers before the next meeting. Council then instructed staff to open the procurement to bids during that interval so the city can compare options.
