The Dane County Board of Supervisors on June 12 adopted Resolution 41 recognizing June 2025 as LGBTQI+ Pride Month, approving the declaration by roll call vote after brief remarks from supervisors and advocates.
The resolution, moved by Supervisor Rose and seconded by Supervisor Ritz, passed by recorded tally of 29 yes and 1 no, with several members absent. The board’s action affirms the county’s commitment "to ensuring all LGBTQI+ residents of Dane County have equal standing and access to housing, employment, education, health care, and other essential services and opportunities," language copied from the resolution text presented at the meeting.
Supporters framed the vote as both symbolic and practical. Supervisor Erickson described the measure as meaningful for youth and families, saying the board’s backing “is very meaningful to me personally and to everybody out there in the community.” Sean O’Brien, policy and advocacy director at FAIR Wisconsin, told the board: “I don't need to tell you that right now is a very scary, very dark time for the LGBTQ plus community,” and urged elected officials to be visible in support.
The adopted resolution cites national origins of Pride Month and local history of LGBTQI+ public service and builds on Dane County’s earlier actions, including declaring the county a trans sanctuary in June 2023. The resolution also states the county’s intent to promote visibility and combat discrimination and violence against LGBTQI+ people.
Board chair and other supervisors thanked colleagues and advocates for bringing the declaration forward. No amendments or further committee referrals were recorded.
The board adopted the resolution as a standalone action; it does not create a new funding commitment in the county budget. The measure will be entered into the county records as Resolution 41 for 2025.
