North Las Vegas kicks off Parks and Recreation Month plans, free events and new programs

City staff told the Parks, Arts, Recreation and Culture Advisory Board on June 10 that the city will celebrate Parks and Recreation Month in July with daily events, two highlighted pool parties and several community partnerships.
Valerie Derrick, deputy director of parks and recreation, said "This is our third year celebrating Park and Recreation Month" and that this year’s theme selected by the National Recreation and Park Association is "build together, play together." She invited the board to the city council’s July 2 proclamation and said the department will post a 30-day events calendar on the city Facebook page and around City Hall.
Two headline events are a free Fourth of July pool party at Silver Mesa Pool from 1 to 4 p.m. and a Pirates Parks and Ship Pool Party scheduled for June 19 at 1 p.m., Derrick said. She also described recent, city-hosted pool parties: the Walker Pool kickoff on May 31 hosted by Councilwoman Ruth Garcia Anderson and Commissioner McCurdy drew "over 300 people that day," and a Petitti pool party held with Councilman Barone drew "over a 100 folks." Derrick said the department is using those events to promote cooling opportunities and community engagement.
The department also announced partnerships that will restart a free farmers market run with the Just 1 Project and an outdoor movie series with a partner called Big Flick. Derrick said the free farmers market runs June 12 at Neighborhood Recreation Center and supplies groceries and food to families in need.
Staff highlighted new public art: murals at Silver Mesa Pool and Silver Mesa Recreation Center. Derrick said the pool murals include desert wildlife motifs and the recreation-center mural is in the main lobby. Several board members praised the artwork and reported positive public reaction.
On operations and rentals, Derrick said the city’s mobile stage has arrived and will be wrapped with rental information; the stage will be used at larger events and will be available for community rental once branded. The department also said a master plan consultant agreement with Barry Dunn consultant group was approved by council; staff said the master plan process will run about a year and will include public engagement and presentations to the advisory board.
Ending: Staff asked the board to review the events calendar and said communications staff will continue to post photos and program details. Derrick said the department will return in future meetings with additional information and requested board participation during master-plan outreach.
