Commission discusses predator control and habitat options to bolster pheasant numbers; staff to convene DWR, UDAF and wildlife groups

Duchesne County commissioners discussed local proposals to increase pheasant populations through predator control or other measures and asked staff to convene a meeting with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR), Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF), and wildlife‑conservation groups.

County staff summarized research and conversations with a regional small‑game biologist who reviewed a South Dakota program that targeted nest predators. The biologist told staff that in a large area — such as a county — killing predators at scale typically has little measurable effect on pheasant populations; he suggested that focused work at the level of a neighborhood or a very small area could show localized benefits. The biologist said improving nesting habitat is often the most effective, long‑term strategy.

Commission discussion points included:

- Whether a bounty or targeted removal program could be funded or partnered with private groups (Wildlife Conservation Fund and others were mentioned). - Concerns about non‑target impacts (for example, skunks preying on prairie dogs) and the need to coordinate with DWR on permitted actions and enforcement. - Questions about enforcement and which county entity would take the lead; commissioners suggested economic development or a DWR partnership would be appropriate.
