Owasso council discusses creating official city flag, proposes community design process

The Owasso City Council discussed establishing an official City of Owasso flag and agreed to pursue a community-driven process to develop a final design.
Mayor Alvin Preger opened the discussion, saying he supported turning the idea into an opportunity for community engagement and for the city’s marketing department to produce a final design. “I personally think it's a great idea and something that we should pursue,” Preger said. He added that the resident who originally presented the idea, Holden Foyle, should be involved in the process, at least to present the final design to the council.
Council members who spoke during the item generally expressed support for moving forward. Councilors suggested soliciting input from residents, involving local school art programs once classes resume, and using town-hall style meetings to collect designs and narrow options. Staff told the council the marketing department would distill community submissions into a recommended design for the council to consider.
The discussion included references to existing graphic elements citizens see around town; staff noted the scripted “Owasso” mark used on the city website and materials has been in use for roughly 20 years and would likely remain part of the city’s visual identity even with a new flag.
No formal vote was taken; the council directed staff to develop a community outreach and selection plan and return the item to a future council meeting for formal consideration.
