IT, highway construction updates: county rolling out new emergency location tech for softphones; road and bridge work continues

Marathon County staff provided routine operational updates to the Infrastructure Committee on June 5 covering information technology projects and highway construction work.
Information technology staff reported final pilot testing of a new mobile device security platform and progress implementing RedSky, a federal requirement to provide accurate location information for 9‑1‑1 calls made from softphones. IT staff said they delayed full rollout to complete additional testing; they also issued an RFP to replace the county’s end‑of‑life telephone system and have identified a vendor for contract negotiations. The county is also reviewing Microsoft licensing ahead of a July renewal.
Highway staff reported active construction projects. Crews were finishing work on County Trunk Highways R and N and expected to complete one project the following Tuesday if weather cooperated. The construction crews also are installing culverts in Reed and plan work in Holden and McMillan; staff said they are experiencing delays obtaining steel culverts and are using alternate (large plastic) culverts where appropriate. Bridge crews have been pressure‑washing bridges to remove salt and extend service life. Staff also noted that State Highway 29 westbound is scheduled for reconstruction next year from Edgar past Highway 97, including the 97 ramps, and that temporary mastic applications are being used to hold pavement until reconstruction.
Committee members asked clarification questions and were updated on timelines; staff did not identify budgetary requests tied to these routine updates during the meeting.
