The committee recommended more instructional time and resources for fourth grade, added lessons for fifth grade where none exist now, updates for sixth through eighth grade, and a suite of materials and social stories intended to support students with special needs.
The committee specifically asked the board to approve a primary curriculum resource — Puberty: The Wonder Years — for use in the district, while noting that Milan staff would select which lessons are used at which grade level. Committee members said they reviewed every lesson and recommended grade‑appropriate placements; the recommendation also includes a permission process for parents and a pathway for one‑on‑one follow‑up instruction when students request more information.
Committee members and board members emphasized that materials for students with special needs required assembling pieces from multiple resources because no single off‑the‑shelf curriculum met those needs. The board’s approval included those special‑needs resource collections and the committee’s request to provide supplementary materials to individual students when appropriate and approved.
Board members thanked committee volunteers for the time‑intensive review process. The board also approved the advisory board membership and co‑chairs for the upcoming two‑year cycle so the group can begin work this fall; the co‑chairs named in the packet will lead the committee’s work and schedule public input sessions.
Board materials show the committee’s recommendations and a matrix that lists each lesson and the committee’s suggested grade‑level placement; the packet and attachments will be posted with the minutes.
