The Milan Area Schools Board of Education on June 4 approved a contract for Ryan McMahon to become superintendent effective July 1, 2025, ratified an administrative salary schedule and approved several personnel appointments, all by unanimous votes.
The personnel committee presented a proposed contract for McMahon and shared a market comparison prepared by Williams & Company that compared Milan to similar districts. Board members said the committee reviewed 13 superintendent contracts as part of its study and described the recommended contract as competitive and fair. The motion to approve McMahon’s contract passed 7‑0.
McMahon, who addressed the board after the vote, thanked the board and outlined priorities including curricular work and grant planning. Board members praised the personnel committee and said the district had conducted a deliberate hiring process.
The board also approved an administrative salary schedule presented by the incoming superintendent to provide a consistent framework for principal and director compensation. Board members noted the schedule includes a footnote tying pay to the district’s financial condition. That motion passed 7‑0.
Jennifer Bookout was approved as assistant superintendent effective July 1, 2025. McMahon explained the district ran a standard hiring process for the assistant superintendent; the committee recommended Bookout as an internal candidate with elementary‑level experience that complements McMahon’s secondary background. The vote to approve Bookout was unanimous.
Separately, the board approved the appointment of Cody Benjamin as behavior specialist at Paddock Elementary for the 2025‑26 school year. That motion carried 7‑0.
Board members thanked outgoing Superintendent Brian Gearbaugh for 33 years of service to Milan Area Schools and congratulated retirees. Gearbaugh said he appreciated the community recognition for his service and that his retirement would be effective at the end of his term.
