Commission plans presence at Memorial Day barbecue to boost outreach

The North Las Vegas Veterans Community Commission discussed participating in the Veterans and Community Resource Center’s Memorial Day barbecue scheduled for May 31, with commissioners and staff volunteering to staff a branded table to promote the center and commission work.
Walter (staff/commission) said the barbecue will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., include about 42 vendor booths, free meals, raffles, music, a car show and Nellis Air Force Base military vehicle displays. Commission members discussed staffing the table in shifts so commissioners could both attend and allow the resource center staff to continue serving the public.
Commissioner Dan Camano said he planned to attend and speak with attendees. Chair Marie Holcomb said she will give remarks at the event and discuss the center’s accomplishments and the commission’s work. Marvin Parker recommended a unified message to highlight commission wins and suggested the commission gather and present specific impact numbers (how many veterans helped, awards obtained) at the event; staff said those figures were not immediately available because the prior VSO had become ill and the data had not been collected.
Commissioners also discussed logistical considerations including heat precautions, water availability, first-responder presence and using branded tents. Staff recommended providing a QR-code or survey at the table to capture attendee needs and follow up after the event.
The item was discussion only; commissioners encouraged participation and staff will provide logistics and literature for the table.
