Central Falls restarts dual-language school design; schematic submission targeted for August

The Central Falls School Building Committee was briefed on the restart of the dual-language school design, which the design team paused in early 2023 during schematic design. The design team reported that it held a kickoff meeting on May 12 and expects to submit stage 3 schematic design to the school building committee in August.
Justin Thibault of AI3 Prime Consulting summarized a timeline that targets schematic design in August, design development by December, 60% documents by March and 100% documents and release to bid by June 2026. The team said those milestones follow the same state-required stages used on the high school project but are shifted because of the prior pause.
The architects reviewed the three-story floor plan and explained program adjacencies by level: the first floor will house pre-K through grade 2 and shared program spaces and a public Zone B with gym, stage and kitchen; the second floor stacks grades 3–6 and includes the media center and student services; the third floor contains classrooms for grades 7–8 and additional shared spaces. The team said it is considering adding two dining areas (one on the first floor for lower grades, one on the third floor for upper grades) to shorten lunch durations and support the dual-language schedule.
Committee members discussed procurement approaches and the possibility of an early enabling package or a staggered bid to allow demolition or limited site work to begin sooner. The design team said early packages carry risks and trade-offs (for example, potential rework or bid sequencing effects) and recommended revisiting procurement options once schematic design is complete.
The team also said they will bring EAL (a historic consultant) back on site to photograph and document the existing high school interior and exterior on June 17–18 to support the project's future historic-preservation process.
No formal committee decision was taken on procurement; the committee asked the design team to return with refined options after schematic design.
