Nature Conservancy and George Mason workshop informs Pocomoke comprehensive-plan mapping on sea-level rise

Commissioners and staff discussed recent workshops run by the Nature Conservancy and George Mason University to map the effects of Superstorm Sandy and community priorities for sea-level-rise responses. Staff said the mapping exercise sought public input on cultural resources and priority areas and that consultants will compare community recollections with modeled impacts.

Participants noted Cypress Park repeatedly surfaced as a high-value cultural and recreational asset; workshop leaders indicated they will evaluate nature-based solutions for flood mitigation that could be integrated into the comprehensive plan. Commissioners said they hoped workshop recommendations and modeling could be folded into the city’s comprehensive-plan chapters (housing, land use, natural resources) and noted the need for coordination among multiple grant-funded studies and state agencies.

Staff recommended scheduling a work session to continue reviewing draft comprehensive-plan chapters that the consultant has circulated. Commissioners asked for additional public engagement; staff said George Mason will return with detailed modeling and possible nature-based recommendations for implementation and grant opportunities.

No formal planning commission action was required; staff will coordinate scheduling of work sessions and follow-up workshops.
