At the May 29 meeting commissioners discussed the city’s ongoing wetland-violation matter at the fairgrounds. Staff summarized city-council direction provided at a recent council meeting: pursue off-site mitigation and explore other city-owned properties as possible mitigation sites.
Staff said the city is looking at several options and has considered property with solar panels on Dunn Swamp Road as a potential location for off-site mitigation. The goal, staff said, is to identify consultants and potential grant or funding options to support mitigation work so that the fairgrounds could be returned to more appropriate uses once mitigation is complete.
Commissioners asked about timelines; staff said none were yet set. No formal motion or vote on mitigation strategy was taken by the planning commission; staff presented the update for transparency and future coordination with consultants and other agencies.
Staff said they had reached out to DNR and engineering consultants as part of a follow-up to identify potential grants for implementation. The item will remain under old business until staff can report back with consultant findings and proposed mitigation steps.
