The City of Norton Board of Control voted unanimously June 2 to approve the purchase of a vehicle lift for the service department in an amount not to exceed $51,882.61. The board said the purchase will be funded from bond proceeds previously issued by the city.
The lift purchase, described in meeting materials as a four-column unit, was presented to the board under new business. Council members said the equipment will allow mechanics to perform heavier work—such as removing transmissions—without resorting to jacks or other temporary methods. Board members noted the city currently lacks a permanent lift that would allow full mechanic use of the service bay.
Board members discussed specifications in the two vendor quotes on the record, including references to a four-point/four-wheel configuration and a note in one quote listing "4 24 volt units." A board member said a four-column lift would provide higher capacity—citing a 72,000-pound rating in the discussion—compared with a two-column lift.
A motion to approve the purchase to BSG for an amount not to exceed $51,882.61 was made and seconded. The roll-call vote was recorded as: Mr. DeHart — yes; Mr. Harbert — yes; Mayor Zita — yes; Mr. Lowry — yes; Miss Keener — yes. The motion passed unanimously.
The board also accepted minutes from its May 19, 2025 meeting, "as printed," and discussed a short list of items expected at the next Board of Control meeting, including roof work, a generator, jacks and floor work. Board members indicated the floor item may not need Board of Control approval and said staff member Justin will prepare legislation for the other items. The board noted the possibility of scheduling an additional meeting in June before the council recess to finalize outstanding items.
No statutes, ordinances or other legal authorities were cited during the lift discussion. The purchase will be executed pursuant to the city's purchasing processes and within the previously issued $4,000,000 in bond proceeds, as stated at the meeting.
