Emergency management plans earlier EOC activation; FEMA evaluates county exercise June 3–5
Summary
County emergency management told commissioners it will activate the Emergency Operations Center earlier in certain nuclear-plant scenarios and that a FEMA-evaluated exercise with a public exit briefing is set for June 5 in Burlington.
The county’s emergency-management director provided a monthly update saying radio-tower permits remain on hold while archaeologists complete site clearances. The director said the project team is also discussing use of county fiber ring to reduce recurring circuit costs between tower sites and the county radio hub.
The director addressed public concern about roadside cameras and traffic counters, clarifying that KDOT traffic counters have been deployed for road studies (locations cited as 20 Second and Fauna and 17th and Caper) and that sheriff’s license-plate readers are separate law-enforcement devices on some county border roads.
On preparedness, the emergency manager said the county will change activation thresholds for the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in some situations and will activate the EOC on earlier signs of certain incidents — notably for incidents at the Wolf Creek Generating Station — rather than waiting for a formal “alert” level. The intent is to compress response time for fast-moving incidents.
The office is preparing for a FEMA-evaluated exercise and associated review; the county will host a FEMA exit brief for evaluators on Thursday, June 5, at 10 a.m. at the Burlington Library followed by a public meeting at 11 a.m. to share initial findings. The director asked that commissioners be prepared to be available for the exercise period and said Everbridge alerts will be used to notify participants.
No formal votes were taken on emergency-management items during the meeting. The director reiterated that the June 5 public exit briefing is open to the public and encouraged attendance.
