At the March 18 meeting, the Downtown Management Board’s design committee reported progress on a proposed perpetual easement for the downtown “Hollywood” sign and recommended reviving lighting for the downtown gazebo.
Ms. Wheaton said she drafted an easement and worked with the city attorney on revisions; the easement has been presented to the property owner, who is currently reviewing it. The easement would allow for an investment of up to $20,000 toward the sign, subject to conditions the committee proposed: the sign be illuminated from dusk until 11 p.m. daily, for 365 days per year, and a five-year limit on further Downtown Management Board capital investment tied to the sign.
The committee is also re-examining the 2022 streetscape study and identified the gazebo as a potential place-making project. The committee favors adding interior illumination so the gazebo’s architectural details read from a distance and retaining roof-illumination elements while removing some ground-level fixtures. Ms. Wheaton said the group has estimates from electricians and will coordinate with Tim from Beckett on next steps.
Committee members noted decisions about lighting hue and fixtures; staff checked the sign vendor’s specification and reported the vendor proposed a warm, yellow-hued bulb. The property owner’s willingness to accept a perpetual easement and the final technical specification for lighting remain under negotiation.
