The Stillwater Area Public Schools Board approved Policy 5.16 (Student Medication and Telehealth) on Tuesday after a second reading and discussion.
Policy 5.16 keeps language permitting a secondary student to possess and use nonprescription pain relief (for example, acetaminophen or ibuprofen) at school provided the district receives written authorization from a parent or guardian. District nursing leadership reviewed the terminology and supported keeping the broader phrasing for “pain relief,” saying the intent is to cover commonly used over-the-counter medications and to encourage families to administer long-lasting allergy medications at home when appropriate.
The policy also includes telehealth language tied to the statutory allowance for using school facilities to provide telehealth mental-health services. Board members asked clarifying questions about scope; staff said telehealth provisions arose from state statute enabling in-school telehealth mental-health visits but did not expand telehealth for unrelated medical services.
Director Paul moved approval; motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. The board directed administration to continue training and to communicate policy specifics to families and staff.
