Lakeville Soccer Club representatives presented a donation to the Lakeville City Council on May 19 to fund two outdoor automated external defibrillator (AED) cabinets in city parks.
Joe Maciarchin, Lakeville parks director, said the cabinets will be installed at Steve Michaud Park and Caspersen Park, both used heavily by the soccer club. Maciarchin described the cabinets as outdoor units that are heated and cooled, have surveillance and can connect to 911, and said they will include the AED devices themselves.
Peter Timah, a Lakeville Soccer Club board member, said the club decided to expand its safety efforts after cardiac events at club tournaments, including one at Caspersen Park a few years ago and a more recent event. “Our club has decided we need to kind of kick this thing in full gear,” Timah said, and the donation is intended to “help save lives.”
Council members asked how the club plans to make the public aware of the devices. Timah said the club will use social media and tournament communications, trainers will ask about AED availability at events, and signage will be posted near the units; he pointed to sample signs to be placed at the parks.
Mayor Luke M. Hellyer and council members thanked the club for the contribution. The presentation required no council vote; Maciarchin said installation and signage plans are underway.
