Board approves paraprofessional master contract extending work year, adding leave options

The Stillwater Area Public Schools Board on Tuesday approved a new master contract with the district’s paraprofessionals covering work-year, leave, insurance, and wage-placement terms.
Chris (district staff member), who led negotiations for administration, told the board the settlement was mutually agreeable with the St. Croix PARA Association and negotiations reflected “professionalism, mutual respect, and shared commitment.” Key terms described by Chris: extension of the paraprofessional work year by two days to accommodate professional development; one floating holiday (to replace the scheduled Memorial Day holiday in next year’s calendar); conversion of emergency leave into discretionary leave with the same total days but fewer restrictions; insurance language reflecting a 6% increase; new language giving human resources discretion to place hires on the wage schedule (with notice to the association if placing above Class 3); sick leave aligned with earned sick-and-safe time; and a split of paid-family-medical-leave premium costs. Chris also said paraprofessionals will receive steps (pay-class increases) through the contract’s classes/steps structure.
Director Thiele moved approval of the contract and Director Jay seconded. Board members praised staff and union negotiators for reaching agreement. The motion passed by voice vote; the transcript records the motion carried. No roll-call tally was recorded in the meeting transcript.
Superintendent Funk and board members said the settlement was within the financial parameters the board set during budget planning, and administration recommended approval.
