Perryton ISD FCCLA students advance to state and nationals; several earn college scholarships

Students from Perryton ISD’s FCCLA program advanced from region to state competitions and several moved on to national-level contests. Two students earned $1,000 scholarships to Texas Tech University, and another student received a $500 scholarship for competition placement.
Members of Perryton Independent School District’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) competition team were recognized during the board meeting for regional, state and national placements and for scholarship awards.
FCCLA sponsor Mrs. Tanner said 18 students formed the district competition team; most advanced from region to state competition and some advanced to nationals. Board members and staff thanked students and the sponsor for community-based projects they said addressed local needs, including work with the Panhandle Crisis Center and awareness campaigns on child abuse.
Board remarks noted that Marisol Garcia and Addison Brown placed first at state in their event and each received a $1,000 scholarship to Texas Tech University that the district accepted on the students’ behalf; the students also earned the opportunity to compete at nationals. The board also said student Giselle Besselrill earned a $500 scholarship for a cupcake presentation event, bringing that student’s total scholarship earnings for that competition to $2,500. Other students described projects ranging from fashion construction to career investigation and community outreach; some placed at region and advanced to state.
Separately, the board read a list of honor graduates and named Lindsey Valenzuela as valedictorian and Caden Rodriguez as salutatorian. The board also recognized district teachers of the year: Jimmy Lewis (Littiwark campus), Dari Harris (PHS), Kevin Black (junior high) and Jessica Shunegota (Wright campus). The board noted two district staff resignations: Maritza Vargas (Williams nurse) and Lois Hamill (speech pathologist in special education). No personnel actions were taken during the public portion of the meeting on those resignations.
Ending: Board members thanked sponsors, volunteers and bus drivers who supported student travel to competitions and noted scholarship awards will be available to students when they reach senior year.
