The Queen Anne's County Board of Education voted Wednesday to appoint Dr. Matthew Kibler as interim superintendent, effective July 1, 2025.
The appointment came at the board's June 4 open session. The board announced the selection and then approved a motion to appoint Dr. Kibler; board members responded by voice vote, with the motion approved.
Dr. Kibler currently serves as assistant superintendent for Queen Anne's County Public Schools and has worked in the district for four years in a variety of roles, including director of accountability and implementation, the board said. He previously worked for nine years at Washington College and began his career as a high school math teacher. Dr. Kibler and his wife, Brynn, live in Queen Anne's County; both of their sons attend the district's schools.
In brief remarks to the board before the vote, Dr. Kibler thanked the board for its trust and said he looked forward to "continuing to work with you all and build on the strong relationship we've established." He added, "We are extremely fortunate to have dedicated and amazing teachers, staff, administrators, as well as a positive and supportive community."
Dr. Kibler will take the interim role when Dr. Salins retires on June 30. In closing remarks earlier in the meeting, Dr. Salins described the June 4 session as his last formal board meeting in a 33-year career and praised recent district achievements, including full graduation rates for both high schools and investments in career and technical education, pre-K expansion and reading initiatives.
The board did not record a roll-call tally in the public audio of the vote; the motion was approved by voice vote.
The board scheduled a photo opportunity after the vote; no additional administrative details or contract terms for the interim appointment were disclosed in the meeting transcript.
Votes and next steps: The motion to appoint Dr. Kibler passed by voice vote at the June 4 meeting; implementation of any transition steps will be determined by the board and district administration.
