Polk County Schools presented 13 proposed policy updates at the June 10 work session, ranging from military leave and graduation requirements to student conduct thresholds and facilities code citations.
Policy staff said three policies address employee military leave to conform to Senate Bill 818, which revised pay for certain military duty circumstances. The student-assessment policy includes technical citation and capitalization corrections that change the scope of "Superintendent" references; policy staff noted that capitalizing "Superintendent" in policy language alters the delegated authority to "Superintendent or designee."
Graduation policies were revised to reflect rule changes allowing some 16-year-olds to take the GED after filing a formal declaration of intent to terminate school enrollment, and to require school boards to notify candidates about adult secondary and post-secondary options. Student conduct (policy 5500) was updated to change the threshold for what the vendor described as petty active misconduct from 350 to 750, aligning the policy with the updated student code of conduct and the threshold for felony reporting.
Facilities-related updates referenced Florida statute 1013.385 and the state educational facilities requirements; building permits policy was updated to remove an outdated 2010 building code reference and to identify statutory duties for the building-code administrator. Two policies proposed by Board member Wyatt add language allowing some students to bring their own lunches under defined restrictions within the care-of-students-with-chronic-health-conditions policy and the wellness policy.
Policy staff told the board the proposed policy changes are routine updates to reflect state law or technical cleanups and recommended advertising the items for a public hearing. Board attorney Crawford will seek authority to advertise the public hearing; staff said the public hearing is scheduled for the July 29 board meeting.
