Hemet City Council appoints 19 members to new Youth Council

The Hemet City Council on June 10 approved appointments of 19 students to a new Hemet Youth Council, a body created by a previously adopted ordinance to give local students a formal channel to advise city officials.
City staff told the council the Youth Council was envisioned in an ordinance adopted earlier and that recruitment and interviews took place over the previous six months. Staff said the ad hoc interview panel — which included Council Member Tom Lodge and Council Member Connie Clark — initially envisioned 11 appointments but recommended 19 students after the panel’s review.
Council members praised the applicants. Council Member Lodge and Council Member Clark, who served on the ad hoc, described interviews as robust and said selecting 19 members from a large, qualified applicant pool was difficult. Staff said the Youth Council will be an appointed body of the city and will work with the city manager, the city clerk and staff to set meeting times and a work plan.
Staff said the Youth Council’s official term begins July 1 and that leaders (a chair and vice chair) will be selected by members at an initial meeting; staff said that meeting will likely be scheduled no later than mid‑July, with potential afternoons around 4:30 p.m. as a default. Possible meeting locations mentioned included the council chamber, a downstairs meeting room and Hemet Public Library.
Council Member Lodge moved to approve the appointments; Council Member Clark seconded. The council voted 5–0 (Council Member Clark, Council Member Lodge, Council Member Mayles, Mayor Pro Tem Krupa and Mayor Jackie Peterson all voting yes).
With the approval, council members invited the newly appointed students to come forward for a group photograph and encouraged them to attend council meetings and participate actively in the coming year. Staff said additional onboarding materials and scheduling communications will be sent to appointees in the coming weeks.
The council did not take other formal action related to the Youth Council at the June 10 meeting.
