Council approves temporary part-time engineering intern position to support summer workloads

Development services staff asked the council to approve a temporary part-time engineering intern position and a new salary schedule effective June 7, 2025. The council voted to adopt staff’s recommendation.
Ms. Savage told the council the engineering department faces a heavy workload this summer with three projects entering construction and the department currently short-staffed: an associate civil engineer position has been vacant for about nine months and an assistant engineer position is also vacant. Savage said the intern would provide summer support, expose engineering students to municipal practice and potentially encourage future hiring.
Councilmembers expressed support and described the position as a pilot that could be expanded across departments. Sue Rodman, a resident, offered public comment in favor of the intern approach and said similar programs have helped other agencies retain employees.
Councilmember Ryan Carter moved to approve staff’s recommendation; the motion passed by roll call: Councilmember Carter — Aye; Councilmember Yarbrough — Aye; Mayor Pro Tem — Aye.
Clarifying details: The position was presented as temporary and part-time, intended to run during a period of high workload and to support three construction projects including the Placerville Drive projects. Salary schedule changes were proposed to be effective on 2025-06-07.
