Library outlines sustainability work: seed library, Library of Things and repair clinics

The Carlsbad Library Board of Trustees heard May 28 about the library's sustainability initiatives, which staff said aim to reduce consumption, extend material life and increase equitable access to tools and educational resources.

Lead librarian Darren Williamson described a range of services that promote reuse and reduce household purchases: a seed library (staff reported more than 1,500 seed packets distributed monthly, projecting roughly 20,000 seed packets annually), a Library of Things offering items such as STEM kits, telescopes and induction cooktops, puzzles and a cardboard-box approach to park passes. Staff also highlighted outreach via the book bike, which operates without fuel, and partnerships with the Friends of the Carlsbad Library, the Carlsbad Community Gardens Collaborative and the City's Sustainable Materials Division.

Williamson said the library now tracks substantial usage of its collections and e-resources: roughly one million physical circulations annually (extrapolated), about 9,000 e-book downloads and 10,000 audiobook downloads per month, and Hoopla/Canopy combined checkouts of about 3,700 per month. Door counts were extrapolated to about 600,000 visits annually.

Staff described upcoming sustainability programming, including a June 14 "fix-it clinic" (tool sharpening and volunteer repair assistance, signup by QR code) and permanent story-walk installation at Buena Vista Reservoir Park. Volunteers and community partners help package seeds and run events; staff said National Charity League volunteers repackage hundreds of seed packets monthly.

Trustees praised the work and asked about opportunities to build programming for youth groups; staff said they have partnered with scouts and Eagle Scout volunteers in the past and are open to more formal collaborations.
