Residents and housing groups press city on repairs, down-payment assistance and rising evictions

Multiple public commenters spoke during the meeting's public-comment period about neighborhood repairs, homeownership assistance and eviction rates.

A Sunnyside resident, identified as Angela Macklin, said her house at 4901 Brinkley Street remained unrepaired despite neighborhood revitalization and multiple prior interactions with city staff. Committee staff arranged for housing department staff and the council district chief of staff to follow up on Macklin's application, verify title status and locate application records.

A representative speaking on behalf of Houston Habitat for Humanity thanked the committee for city support of down-payment assistance and said the new homeowner assistance program is a "key that unlocks the front door to stability, equity, and opportunity for families," citing the practical effect of down-payment help for partnering Habitat families.

Taylor Laredo, community navigator with Texas Housers, introduced the organization's work on eviction data and outreach and warned that eviction filings in Harris County remain above pre-pandemic levels ("about 20-something percent" higher, per the commenter). Laredo offered Texas Housers as a resource as HCDD and the county coordinate eviction-related protections and funding in crisis-response planning.

HCDD staff acknowledged ongoing coordination with Harris County on eviction-related responses during broader disaster-recovery and rental-assistance planning; city staff said more details on county collaboration would be shared as those programs are finalized.
