April library report: volunteer breakfast, Earth Day education and rising e-content use

Library staff told the Carlsbad Library Board of Trustees on May 28 that April 2025 was busy with community programs, rising electronic-material circulation and increased program attendance.
Principal librarians highlighted two special events: a volunteer appreciation breakfast held April 26 that welcomed about 30 volunteers, and an April 22 Life Cycle of Waste program at Cole Library that partnered with Republic Services and drew 41 elementary-age children and families to a hands-on composting and waste-sorting activity.
Andrea Hilliard, principal librarian, told trustees that five tracked metrics showed year-over-year increases and that electronic material circulation and program attendance grew in double digits. Hoopla usage was up 64% and Kanopy usage rose 43% compared with the same month last year, Hilliard said. Staff attributed growth to expanded marketing, outreach and the availability of movies and TV shows on those platforms.
Trustees asked whether there were public speakers on the monthly report; the clerk reported there were none. The board offered thanks for the work and no formal action was required.
