WHO and PAHO warn low funding, security constraints hinder cholera response in Haiti

UN partners reported more than 2,100 suspected cholera cases in parts of Haiti and said that low funding and security constraints are limiting surveillance, clinical care and water-treatment efforts.
The United Nations briefing said cholera remains a major public‑health emergency in Haiti's metropolitan areas and in Cap‑Haïtien, with more than 2,100 suspected cases reported to national authorities since late December and dozens of associated deaths.
The briefing cited World Health Organization and Pan American Health Organization‑led response efforts that focus on surveillance, clinical care, disinfection of high‑risk areas, water treatment and community awareness. Between May 10 and 17, UN partners reported reaching more than 7,000 displaced people with cholera prevention briefings, distributing roughly 2,000 water purification tablets and installing more than 30 handwashing stations across displacement sites.
UN officials warned that security constraints and low funding levels are jeopardizing prevention, case management and laboratory testing and called for increased support to maintain response activities.
