UNICEF and UN health partners told a UN briefing that escalating hostilities in Sudan are driving a growing cholera outbreak and worsening malnutrition among children, particularly in Khartoum state.
The UN spokesperson said authorities in Khartoum state reported more than 7,700 suspected cholera cases since January, including about 1,000 cases in children under 5. The briefing said two of the state's seven localities — Jebel Aliyah and Khartoum (as referenced in the briefing) — are at risk of famine and account for roughly 33% of some 300,000 acutely malnourished children in the state.
The spokesperson said UNICEF estimates that more than 1,000,000 children live in the affected localities across Khartoum state and stressed that cholera and severe malnutrition are preventable and treatable when children are reached in time. The briefing said access constraints and ongoing fighting complicate delivery of health and nutrition services.
