Nevada County staff opened a public outreach meeting on a proposed ordinance to allow alternative housing types — including recreational vehicles, trailers and tiny homes on wheels — on private property, saying the county plans to develop a draft ordinance and seek additional public comment before sending recommendations to advisory bodies and the Board of Supervisors.
Tyler Barrington, principal planner and interim director of housing, told roughly 70 attendees that the outreach is the “first opportunity for people to comment” after the board directed staff to pursue additional housing options following the county’s February 2025 tiny‑homes‑on‑wheels ordinance and related pro‑housing actions. Barrington said staff had received “around 40 written comments” to date and hopes to release a draft ordinance around July for additional public meetings and formal review by municipal advisory councils, the Planning Commission and then the Board of Supervisors.
The meeting brought residents, housing advocates and service providers together to discuss safety, sanitation, wildfire risk, density limits and enforcement. Speakers described people already living in nontraditional units and urged the county to create pathways to legal, inspected housing rather than relying on complaint‑driven enforcement.
