Carroll County announces Brownfield assessments with Terracon and EPA; community meetings scheduled

Carroll County officials told the fiscal court that Terracon has begun site assessments for the county’s Brownfield program and that the county will hold multiple community meetings over the coming months.
A county official identified as Matt told the court the assessment project will last about a year to a year and a half and that the consultant plans multiple meetings to gather public input. The official said a community meeting was scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon the week of the meeting and that another meeting was tentatively scheduled for June 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The county representative also said staff would meet with Terracon and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency the next day as part of routine follow-up on the Brownfield work.
Why it matters: Brownfield assessments identify potential contamination on previously developed sites and shape cleanup and redevelopment planning. The meetings provide residents and stakeholders an opportunity to review sites and offer input to the consultants and agencies conducting assessments.
The court encouraged “plenty of opportunity” for residents and interested individuals to be involved as the project moves forward.
