Collegedale commissioners ask staff to put large-trash and disposal options on upcoming workshop

Collegedale, Tenn. ' Commissioners at the Collegedale City Commission's May 19 meeting asked staff to include a discussion of large-trash pickup, carpet and electronics disposal, and roll-off options on an upcoming workshop agenda.
Commissioners said residents have asked for clearer options for disposing of items such as carpet, construction debris and electronics. Staff explained the city's current disposal provider does not accept certain materials (for example, carpet and some construction debris), and if those items are included the receiving facility will reject the entire load. That limitation means contractors and residents sometimes must arrange alternative disposal at facilities that will accept those materials or rent roll-off containers and pay separate hauling fees.
Staff said the city historically used a different landfill and that acceptance policies changed after the regional operator changed ownership; staff identified that difference as a primary cause of the current constraints. Commissioners said residents who live in other jurisdictions sometimes have options their residents do not, and asked staff to review options, costs and potential partnerships.
City staff suggested the matter be added to a workshop scheduled for the week after Memorial Day so the commission can discuss bulk pickup policies, roll-off usage, code enforcement coordination and an annual or seasonal citywide yard-sale event. Staff cautioned that due to workload some items may be moved to the next workshop if full information cannot be compiled by Thursday prior to the meeting.
The commission did not take formal action on policy changes at the meeting. Staff was asked to prepare background information for the workshop, including lists of materials currently accepted by the city's disposal provider, cost estimates for roll-off or special-haul options, and coordination with codes enforcement.
