A resident who identified herself as the youth city council advisor said her daughter died by suicide and urged officials to increase support for young people.
"My daughter died by suicide, and so I really wanted to help more people and push more help for our youth," the resident said. She added that after an unsuccessful run for city council last year she has chosen to work as a youth city council advisor.
Asked what young people need, the resident said, "I think they need direction, and they need, goals and a vision, a future outlook on life, so they're not stuck in the moment in the day." She described a local peer group of grieving parents she called "angel moms," saying, "we have more now in our group that have lost their children to suicide than to other accidents." The resident said she sees a pattern of young people feeling overwhelmed and lacking support: "life is too much, it's too hard, there's not enough support for them, and they just can't deal with it."
The remarks were delivered during the meeting's public-comment portion; no formal motions or votes regarding youth mental-health programs were recorded in the transcript provided.
