Aurora presents expanded park security plan after 2024 patrols and incidents review

Mike Baum, Open Space Superintendent, presented the Parks and Quality of Life Policy Committee on May 22 with a data‑driven update on park safety, patrol patterns and investments made in 2024 and 2025.
Baum said Aurora Police Department data and ranger reports show 358 reported incidents on parks, recreation and open space properties in 2024, compared with 53,000+ incidents citywide, which staff summarized as "just over one half of one percent" of citywide reports. He told the committee most park incidents in 2024 were property crimes: "Out of the top 10 crime types, only 3 of them are crimes against people. The other 7 are crimes against property." Baum stressed the data set is statistically small, so trends can be sensitive to individual events, and that seasonality and user volume affect counts.
