Staff reports on grant applications, surveys and adaptive reuse of Lord Heigl House

City staff told the board they are awaiting the state budget to be finalized for funding of a historic resources survey for Seaboard and Edgewood and that they were preparing a grant application for a survey of Golden Beach and Gulf Shores.
“We are still waiting on the state to finalize next fiscal year's budget to see if we get the funding to do the historic resources survey for Seaboard and Edgewood,” Harry Klinkhammer said, adding the project ranked 32 of 76 and that funding looked possible but was not confirmed until Tallahassee finalizes the budget. Klinkhammer also said staff was preparing an FY 20 grant application due next week for a survey covering Golden Beach and Gulf Shores.
Staff also reported the city had leased the Lord Heigl House to a business operator and discussed adaptive reuse. Klinkhammer said the lessees understand the building is on the local register and that exterior work would require review; they have expressed no plans for major exterior changes beyond signage. Staff said the lessees own historic properties elsewhere and expressed interest in interpreting Venice history at the property. Finally, staff invited board members to a ribbon-cutting for the renovated former Bessey Museum building on June 5 at 9 a.m.
No formal board action was taken on the grants or the lease; staff will continue grant applications and will coordinate with the board if exterior alterations are proposed for registered properties.
