Board members said modern impact windows often use single sheets of glass with interior muntins that lack the exterior depth and shadow lines of historic divided-light windows. “We would have to make an alteration to our code to adjust that, or give more guidance,” said a board member, and another noted the need to study manufacturers’ capabilities to avoid requiring proprietary or unavailable products. Staff said a change could require further study to determine what manufacturers can produce without imposing undue hardship on property owners.
Separately, board members raised concerns about broken or displaced roof tiles left in place after storms. Staff said property maintenance code and code enforcement procedures could apply if roofing is not weather-tight or permitted repairs (such as a tarp) remain in place too long. The board asked staff to research options for guidance and potential code enforcement referrals so that historic resources are stabilized and not left in a condition that risks further damage.
