A resident addressing the Cerritos Community Safety Committee on May 20 urged the city to act on a series of community-led safety measures including a voluntary, privacy-conscious neighborhood camera network, increased sheriff visibility in recurring hot spots, and an online Cerritos safety hub.
The commenter described recent neighborhood incidents — a vehicle rollover and reports of suspicious doorbell activity — and said, “Right now, I believe that confidence in the public safety is eroding.” He asked the committee to consider an opt-in camera network to share footage with law enforcement during active investigations, increased drive-bys and on-foot patrols in recurring areas such as Artesia, Shoemaker, the Liberty Park area and South Street corridors, and faster follow-up for animal and nuisance reports.
Committee and staff members announced a public safety town hall scheduled for Wednesday, July 30, starting at 6 p.m. at Cerritos Park East; the event will feature vendors demonstrating personal and residential security products, a display of the city’s drone program and a presentation by an LA County sheriff’s department executive. During the meeting, Mark Smith reported Neighborhood Watch activity has increased, with meetings now drawing 30-plus attendees and volunteers conducting vacation checks through safercerritos.org.
Ending: City staff said they will coordinate the July 30 town hall with committee outreach and continue layered approaches — volunteers, CSOs, deputies — to address safety concerns raised by residents.
