Oroville bocce group asks council for help funding two courts at Table Mountain Golf Course

Janice White, who said she represents Oroville Bocce, asked the Oroville City Council during the public comment period for possible city assistance to pay for materials to build two bocce courts at Table Mountain Golf Course.

"We were asking to see if there's any possible way that they could help us with some of the funds, to get this together," White said, describing the group’s nonprofit status, ongoing fundraising and a Friday fundraiser at Table Mountain Golf Course. She told councilmembers the group has six members and that she and a volunteer collected more than 40 raffle prizes for the event.

White said the organization has submitted plans and estimates and is looking for roughly $22,500 to cover material costs for two 12-by-80-foot courts. She urged the council to consider any help the city could provide and noted bocce has youth programming elsewhere, including Chico.

Council members thanked White and asked about outreach and publicity. Councilman Weber asked for a flyer for the fundraiser; White said she had paper flyers and could provide a digital version for social media. Vice Mayor Smith praised White’s persistence in establishing the nonprofit. Councilman Johnston asked whether downtown businesses had been solicited; White said she had reached out but downtown businesses had not been able to help so far.

No formal action by the council was taken at the meeting; the item was raised as public comment and councilmembers indicated they would explore possible funding sources and avenues such as the city’s grant or supplemental-funding programs.
