Arlington Board briefs Virginia delegation on local impacts of federal workforce cuts; asks Richmond for targeted aid

Arlington County officials told members of the county’s Virginia General Assembly delegation at a May 19 work session that recent federal workforce reductions and contract cancellations are already affecting the local economy and the county’s social-safety net and could cause much larger problems if unaddressed.

The briefing, led by Arlington County Board Chair Tax Carantones and moderated by Board member Maureen Coffey, included presentations from Ryan Tuhill, director of Arlington Economic Development, and Anita Friedman, director of the Department of Human Services. County staff asked the delegation to pursue five economic-development actions at the state level and a package of measures to stabilize housing, homelessness prevention and community-based services.

County officials said Arlington faces an outsized risk because of the area’s high concentration of federal employees and contractors. Ryan Tuhill told the delegation that regional forecasts show a weakening labor market and that a Northern Virginia business survey found 63% of respondents cited federal cuts as a key reason for pessimism. "Anything we can do to help mitigate some of that uncertainty is certainly, helpful," Tuhill said.
