The chief said one existing sign near the former church location had been struck several times and needs to be moved; another existing sign used wording that potentially promoted specific businesses, which the chief said conflicts with DOT right‑of‑way restrictions and the town’s approach to wayfinding.
The chief described a proposal to reface the main sign, rebuild legs, and install a smaller sign at a parking‑lot corner facing Alex Street; the smaller sign would use generic categories such as “dining,” “entertainment,” and “shop” rather than naming businesses. Commissioners moved and seconded a motion to submit the proposal to council and voted in favor.
Planning staff and commissioners discussed siting so the smaller sign would be visible to drivers turning onto Alex Street and placed on the grassy area before a parking lot. The chief said the proposed smaller sign would avoid a lengthy purchase process and would be scaled to the smaller road where it will be placed. The commission did not approve construction work but authorized the recommendation to council for the proposed locations and design adjustments.
