Committee recommends confirmation for Drug Policy administrator; other appointments discussed and deferred

The Senate Judiciary and Rules Committee voted to send the gubernatorial reappointment of Mary Ann King, Administrator of the Office of Drug Policy, to the Senate floor with a recommendation that she be confirmed.
"I am so impressed with her work and her energy and her just passion for her work," said Senator Wintrow, who moved the recommendation. The motion was seconded; the committee carried the recommendation by voice vote.
The committee also heard testimony from Sheriff Matt Thomas, who sought reappointment to the Offender Management Board. Sheriff Thomas described his role representing the Idaho Sheriffs' Association and discussed ongoing board work to convert the offender registry to a tiered, risk-based system and to certify treatment providers. The committee did not take a vote on his reappointment and will consider it at a future meeting.
Separately, Mike Matthews appeared virtually to discuss his 20 years on the Commission of Pardons and Parole and described the workload for commissioners, saying commissioners need approximately 75 days per year and that panels of three meet multiple weeks per month to hear cases. The committee also did not vote on Matthews' reappointment at this meeting and said it would consider the appointment at a subsequent session.
Committee chairs said votes for the sheriff's and parole appointments are customarily taken at the next meeting to allow time for committee review.
